Full‑Scale Test Location for the Dutch Float Dike

Client: Delfland Water Authority
Dimensions: Two Dutch Float Dikes, approx. 40 m total length and approx. 0.80 m height

At the silt depot in Hoek van Holland, Dura Vermeer constructed a full‑scale (1:1) test installation. It included an interior corner with a concrete pylon and a flexible exterior corner.

This setup allowed demonstrations of the system’s operation, where visitors could experience the buoyant force of the water by standing on the gates — even with 20 people on a single gate, it still rose effortlessly.

The installation was also used to test water tightness and to determine the engineering standards for safety calculations performed by Grontmij.
