Dutch Float Dike in Steyl‑Maashoek

Client: Limburg Water Authority
Dimensions: Three Dutch Float Dikes, approx. 140 m total length and approx. 3 m height

Steyl is a monastic village in Limburg with a protected historic townscape along the river Meuse. The river drains rainfall from a large upstream catchment area. Water levels can rise very rapidly, causing the village to flood several times over the past decades.

The Float Barrier has a flood‑protection height of three meters and consists of twelve horizontally hinged gates installed in a concrete basin. As the water level rises, the basin fills, the gates float upward automatically, and together they form a closed flood barrier.
In addition to providing high‑water protection, the barrier also serves as a recreational “balcony on the Meuse,” preserving the river view during low‑water conditions.
