Dutch Float Dike in Arcen

Client: Limburg Water Authority
Dimensions: Dutch Float Dikes with a total length of approx. 650 m and a height of approx. 2.10 m

The existing dikes in Arcen are not high or strong enough to protect the town adequately against future high‑water events. Residents, the Limburg Water Authority, the Province of Limburg, and the municipality of Venlo worked closely together to make a Dutch Float Dike in Arcen possible.

This collaboration generated the financial resources needed to build the more expensive self‑closing barrier instead of a glass flood barrier. The concept is that the barrier remains invisible during low water but rises automatically only when necessary. This ensures that throughout the rest of the year, gardens and public spaces remain accessible.
